This past week watching the Williams sisters loose so horribly in France at the 2008 Roland Garros Grand Slam was disheartening. In fact it was downright bad news as far as I’m concerned. Because in my mind it’s over for them. The sisters are done. They may play as professional single players for the next 2 years, but after that I foresee them leaving the game. And they got knocked out early! The slam started and I felt like I hadn’t even had a chance to get settled in. Usually I catch as much of the first week as I can, but ok, I might miss a game or two with no harm done. But this year if you weren’t on top of it, you would have missed their self-defeating performances altogether. Most people believe that Venus and Serena are too distracted by all their varied interests, hobbies, ventures, and general lack of attention to tennis. But my strong belief is that the Williams have lost their momentum due to a dramatic shift in family life. Their sister, Yetunde, was killed on the stre...

The worst of nature’s fury often brings out the best in people’s generosity toward those affected by disasters. For example, according to national headquarters of the American Red Cross, the organization received more than $2.12 billion from September to December 2005 to help victims of Hurricane Katrina in the south-central United States, with much of the money contributed through local American Red Cross chapters around the country. What many people may not realize is that 100 percent of those dedicated donations went straight to the national Red Cross organization, creating some unintended fund-raising challenges for local chapters in their ongoing mission to serve the needs of people closer to home. “Americans were very generous in giving to major national and international relief campaigns throughout the past year,” said Rick Hankins, director of administrative services and information technology for the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the American Red Cross. “At the same tim...

Today’s faucets do more than just regulate the flow of cold and hot water into your sink. In the kitchen there are many available features, such as pull-out or pull-down sprays, water filtering systems and a variety of designer styles and finishes. Look for the latest modern conveniences that will make your life easier. In the bath, style is usually the decision maker and often the bath faucet is available with matching accessories to create a “suite” look in the overall bath. However, when evaluating different styles certain features such as high spouts allow for more room to fill cups and wash hands. Water filtration systems are also available for bathroom faucets and guarantee purified water for teeth brushing while leaving in fluoride for healthy teeth. Some faucets provide a source of cold drinking water that bypasses home water-softening systems allowing the water to retain natural minerals. Keep this in mind the best solution for leaky faucets is a preventative one: buy ...

The idea that there exists a secret cabal of power elite whose soul purpose is world domination has inspired untold numbers to cower in paranoia. If they even exist, this group, often referred to as The Illuminati, are so secretive that they can only be speculated upon. They are rumored to be the most powerful people in the world. Based on these rumors lets see what things these people can teach us about becoming “enlightened”. Here is my list of the top ten things that the Illuminati do that make them better than the rest of us. 10. They start off rich and powerful. This is number ten because it’s the least important. Having a good foundation to start from does make things easier but if you’re smart, have a plan and be flexible, it’s very likely that you can achieve anything. Poet Rob McCuen once said “I was born a poor bastard. All I had to go was up.” 9. They build networks and trust the right people. You may find that with all the people in the world there are a lot o...

After many trips through the rumor mill, Mark Prior accepted the Chicago Cubs’ offer on January 27 to a one-year, $3.65 million contract. That is $900,000 more than the salary he would have earned under the contract he voided in November. Since Prior’s definitive season in 2003 (18-6), he has cooled off somewhat, and has only managed to go 17-11 over the past two seasons. The Cubs were within five outs of reaching the World Series in 2003, due, in part, to Prior’s performance. A sore elbow put him on the disabled list early last season, and when he entered the normal rotation again, he was hit on the same elbow by a scorching line drive. He finished the 2005 season going 11-7 with a 3.67 ERA over 27 games. The Chicago Cubs’ pitcher, whose name has been mentioned as possible trade bait this off-season, said that he was not too upset at the rumors because he figured they were just that — rumors. Rumor had it that he was going to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for outfielder Bo...
